Its Back With A Vengeance: Assassinator Pro II Clacker Spinnerbait
Throughout an anglers career more often than not that angler will develop a relationship with a certain bait or style of bait. During my career I thought I was avoiding this phenomenon but the more I think about it now the more I realize I too have a confidence bait, despite my attempts to avoid it. This lure got to me simply because it is unique and has produced better for me than the traditionalist baits. This bait is known as the Assassinator Pro II Clacker Spinnerbait. This particular spinnerbait is unlike any other that I have used; Assassinator’s clacker spinnerbait uses a very unique patented arm to make the two willow blades "clack" together. The action and sound of this is something that the fish have yet to experience and it drives them crazy, crazy enough to where they flat out attack this bait. Perhaps the craziest thing about this bait is that I do not recommend using a trailer hook simply because I have yet to get a fish that hasn’t choked the Clacker. Not only do the fish choke it but usually when that happens with a spinnerbait the fish is always a lunker, while for some reason big fish do love this bait even the smaller fish will attempt to devour your spinnerbait. While I can sit here all day and tell you why I love this bait it is better that I explain the history and hardware of the Assassinator Pro II Clacker. Back in 2004 a well-known company by the name of Persuader made and patented an arm design on a spinnerbait that would make anglers raise an eyebrow in interest. Even then this bait was dubbed "Pro Assassinator Clacker." There was one major flaw that plagued the Clacker, the price point. With a price of $8.99 many anglers found it difficult to try something new. For years companies bought and sold this patent without realizing this problem, that is, until now. When Assassinator Baits acquired the patent they finally solved the problem by listening to fellow anglers and taking their thoughts into consideration. In 2010 Assassinator dropped the price down to a price point under $6.00, putting it easily in the reach of any angler’s budget. The new $5.79 price point is something that simply astonishes me, it proves that you don’t have to spend big money on a bait to get something new, unique, and of high quality. Like with their other products the Clacker uses premium Sampo ball bearing swivels to ensure that the blades spin with ease to move as much water as possible while creating a ton of flash. Those swivels would be in-vane though if the blades weren’t up to snuff. The blades are offered in 24-carat gold, copper, nickel-plated, or lacquered polished brass to create as much flash as a one million candle spot light. The cool thing about the clacker spinnerbaits is that if you were to pick up one of my baits and felt the blades it would feel as though the blades have been hammered. While you would think that this would tear through blades you don’t need to worry about that with the Assassinator blades, they are made to withstand this kind of abuse. You may now be thinking "Sure, the blades are strong, but what about the frame", well, the frame is made of durable 0.040" stainless steel. This enables you to tune the bait if desired or leave it be, even after hooking up on a 5+ pound largemouth. Moving down the frame you get to the beautiful narrow holographic shad head that features 3D eyes and an insanely hard paint. This bait is meant to be abused, just as any bait should be. Moving past the head we get to the insanely high quality bioflex skirt that utilizes silicone strands designed by professional anglers, guides, and your average joe. The last major feature is the use of a Mustad UltraPoint hook. Its common knowledge that the UltraPoint hooks are some of the best on the market and no matter what kind of abuse you put them through that hook will stay needle sharp. Overall the value of the Assassinator Pro II Clacker is one that should not be overlooked; they offer extremely high quality and a low price that even the giants can’t contend with. You may think we are blowing smoke but there is a reason why this bait has always been hush-hush, nobody wants this secret out, that what we are here for. Get your today! Capt Jake’s (Mid South Bass Guide) Buzz-Bait’s 101, Tips and Tactics Over the years, I have noticed that most bass anglers and my clients in general, agree there is nothing more exciting than watching the water explode in response to the action of a top-water lure. Enticing a surface strike requires you to get their attention. Among top-water lures few, if any, come close to creating the attention and surface disturbance as does the buzz-bait! There is several ways to entice that explosive big bite on top-water; one is with a Buzz-Bait, Assassinator Buzzbaits are just the ticket! The unique splashing, sputtering, and gurgling commotion created by a buzz-bait is very hard to resist, even for a bass that is being lazy. In addition to reinforcing the worth of this time proven big bass catcher; this article is designed to provide you with some pointers which should help improve your strike and hook-up percentages with a buzz-bait. As with any lure, successful bass catching requires us to make adjustments in our presentation until we hit the one the bass seem to be most responsive too. Employing a buzz-bait is no different. I prefer 1/4oz., 3/8oz or 1/2oz. buzz-baits made of high quality materials that can take a beating from the largest of fish and hold together. Worn-in lures tend to produce a squeaky noise which I believe gives the lures added appeal. One of the "noise" enhancing modifications I like to make is to bend the blade arm slightly downward so that the blade ticks the shaft as it rotates. Another is to drill several holes in the blade so that it emits a "bubble" trail as it moves across the water. Learning how to present your lure properly is simply a matter of practice and trial/error each day you’re on the water. One day it may be a fast (burn) retrieve and the next it might be just fast enough to keep the lure chugging along the surface of the water. It is important to engage your reel just before the lure hits the water. Doing so removes any slack from your line and allows you to start your retrieve before the bait has a chance to sink. During the retrieve, I hold my rod tip up which keeps the bait in proper contact with the water but not so high as to lift the bait from the water or prevent me from generating a solid hook set. As the bait approaches to the boat, I gradually lower my rod tip thereby allowing the bait to maintain proper contact with the water. Use caution in the last ten feet of your retrieve, a fair amount of the time fish will follow your lure all the way back to the boat and try to take it from you at the last minute. It’s always a good idea to figure eight your lure just prior to loosing contact with the water. Colors, I prefer white, black/red best in clear water; in stained water I have been known to tie on a combination chartreuse/ white, chartreuse/ blue or the famed Guntersville Red. My color choice is usually predicated on the light conditions, water clarity and time of the year. One other aspect that can make a huge difference is the “Delta Blade” or “Prop” as many know the varying the color from polished aluminum to a black or gold can make all the difference in your fishing trip. Lastly, let’s talk lure make up and why the Assassinator Buzz-Bait is the only buzzbait you’ll find on my boat.
